  1. Just finish in the lathe. Get some sand paper and scotch brite. We turn everything. Very rarely do we need od grinding

  4. IF- a hose clamp is the quicker option, use some electrical sealing tape, not plain electrical tape, on the surface. It adheres to itself and almost everything that I've found.

  7. People like to assume / complain about 3d printing in the machine space and taking jobs. I personally feel its going to compliment the shop very well and make things more efficient

  8. Had a dog let loose allowing the part to spin with the wheel once. Part came out of the machine about 6 inches over my head. Fun times

  9. Seems like that machine ought to come with a wider set of dog diameters. Maybe just go thru the effort to make a range of sizes from steel or aluminum that can sit in the tool chest.

    3D printing is a cool solution tho and a real boon when oddball stuff is needed. But this was just a round shaft so seems like it won't be the last time this issue crops up. IMO worth fixing with some harder tools.

  10. Thats a very creative blend of additive technology to your normal cnc/grinding work to implement a solution to a problem.

  11. I would question if the use of a lathe dog would be appropiate in this case, specifically in the position in which it was clamped in, it would have been better suited to the flats of the part rather than the round edge. Also the use of soft jaws could have achieved the same effect.

  12. How about a split clamp design? With a split one side and your drive dog the other for increased clamping force

  13. Don't feel so bad about your single hose clamp goof up. A single hose clamp ended up sinking a brand new 50' Hatteras sport fishing boat on its way from Oceana Virginia to New Bern NC. 2 men died when the boat sank in frigid Feb waters here in the Neuse River mere feet from the inlet here in Oriental NC. Their bodies were found across the river frozen to death. One hose clamp.

  14. It's really impressive how durable the 3D printed part is. I guess it would have to be in order to work in that machine. Great solution and video! Also the terror flashback scene at 0:57 was great lol! And Tyson's face at 1:27! Loved that entire bit

  17. 3D print some little "Shoes" for the screws so you dont have to f+%& around with the shims 🙂 That would be a nice addition to the drive dog

  18. An interesting application but seemed like the most expensive and inefficient way of doing this.. This could have been designed and cut from a piece of plate steel, aluminum or plasitc (Plasma, waterjet or laser.. all would do the job).. Weld on a few nuts and a tab and you would have had what you needed in an hour or less..

  19. Very cool. Communication and teamwork to find a quick solution. My question is, how did they get the threaded inserts into the 3D printed part? Does the insert have internal and external threads that then screw into the tapped part? Great video!
