for i think newer photoshop programs you need to hold down crtl or command and then click on the thumbnail in order to make the selection

Guys, in minute 4:40 select the shape, right click and select "Make Selection" manually, and it does the same thing that is shown in the video. I hope this helps someone. 🙂
